INTEGRATING AVAILABILITY AND DISASTER TOLERANCE
Analyst Opinion Today's networking environment is characterized by a strong need for high data and application availability. Business networks host mission-critical applications, and any network downtime can be extremely expensive. IS departments worldwide have implemented a myriad of new products and topologies to try to guarantee sufficient network and application fault tolerance. Often, these implementations have "at great expense" solved only small parts of the availability problem, leaving major gaps in a company's overall data protection and accessibility schemes. The result can be downtime that is still too high, and frustration throughout all levels of the company. Complete protection for mission-critical installations requires protection across four separate elements of network and application architecture, application failover, protection from data loss, continuous access to data, and disaster tolerance. Unfortunately, covering all of these elements is often expensive and difficult. A new type of product has emerged that is changing the nature of HA architecture implementation for a broad class of networks the High Availability Suite (HA Suite). In our opinion, NSI Software, Inc.'s Double-Take® product is a premier example of the High Availability Suite. It is a fully integrated suite and a compelling product that offers outstanding capabilities in all four of the core elements of availability, as well as having several unique side benefits. When correctly and completely implemented, Double-Take can provide up to Class 4 application availability, which is sufficient for the majority of business networks. As opposed to most current clustering products, which unto themselves only achieve Class-2 availability, Double-Take goes beyond a company's need for server failover and adds data replication, backup, versioning, and data sharing capabilities. This complete coverage of core availability elements, coupled with Double-Take's high level of integration make it extremely cost effective and relatively simple to deploy. While not a panacea for every network, Double-Take is a solid product that can provide a high level of availability at a reasonable cost, and it is the best currently available High Availability Suite.
